1796 Antique Hieroglyphic Bible for the Amusement of Youth, 100+ woodcuts
5" x 3.25" x 3/8" inches thick
overall GOOD++ (G++) condition
A
"curious hieroglyphic Bible; or, Select Passages in the Old
and New Testaments, represented with emblematical figures ofr the
Amusement of Youth: designed chiefly to familiarize tender Age, in a
pleafing and diverting Manner, with the early Ideas of the Holy
Scriptures; to which are subjoined, A fhort Account of the Lives of
the Evangelists and other Pieces, illuftrated with Cuts." Sewn binding is very tight.
Paper boards are worn and faded but holding well. All woodcuts are present with the exception of four found on pages
117/118 and 119/120 which have been cut out. Pages are clean without foxing or staining. Some engravings
are stronger than others. The rear endpaper is present. There does not appear to have been a front one. The front pastedown
has a bookplate of Richard Carlyon Coode. A beautiful little book.

"The Christian Library: a reprint of popular religious works of
1836 with essays on the lives of John Wesley, William Cowper, Thomas
Spencer and Philip Melancthon as well as Samuel Pearce and numerous
others works. The book is solid but there is some wear on the corners and the cover.
Binding
is in good shape, all pages are attached, covers are solidly attached
but start to feel somewhat loose (as to be expected - handle with
care). Some age related coloring. Print is easy to read.

GOOD (G) condition. As per the title page "The
Union Bible Dictionary for the use of schools, Bible classes and
families prepared for the American Sunday-school union, and revised by
the committee of publication." It has many illustrations (as can be seen in
photos). Very
nice antique book. Binding and all 649 pgs. are intact! Last
cover page is torn. Brown staining (foxing) is evident in
book. Inner pages are off-white. The corners of the cover are
worn, and has small 3/4 split in lower binding. It is signed by
various members of the Smith Family from Marlboro, NH. Some cover wear and

The pages are complete, with some age marking. The binding is tight, but the covers have scuffs and tears and part of the spine cover is missing. The previous owner's name -- R. Easterday -- is written on the front and back (blank) pages.

63 beautiful illustrations (many chromolithographs). Included is the Hymn, "TELL ME THE STORY OF JESUS" and other appropriate Hymns with music. Published in 1890, this book is
a VERY GOOD CONDITION! The hinges are reinforced with bookbinding tape on both hinges. Three quarters of the book has neat, clean text and pages with no markings. The last 100 pages has a couple of pages, not every one, where pen underlining for one word or sentence have been highlighted. It is neatly done, however, a mild blemish that must be disclosed. Otherwise, the illustrations, text and overall appearance is very nice.

When describing our
Bibles we use the following definitions for
conditions:
*
EXCELLENT - not used very often, as this denotes a very,
very good book - in "as new" condition.
* VERY GOOD -
no major faults but it is not perfect.
* GOOD - below
the condition of Very Good with faults that are listed in the
description.
* FAIR - the book will be looking quite tired & have quite a
bad problem that is listed in the description.
* POOR - this
book has a major fault(s) that is described & possibly
rather mangled.

What
determines the price of an antique book?
Generally, the factors that
most effect a Bible’s price are:
- Age… a 1573 printing costs more than a 1673
printing.
- Size… a 12 to 17 inch tall “pulpit
folio” costs more than a smaller Bible.
- Extra Features… Uniqueness (first
edition), Psalter-Hymnals,
Almanac-Calendars, Apocrypha, Maps, Concordances,
Illustrations, decorative red ruling, etc.
- Another
thing that detracts from the monetary value of a family
Bible is the handwritten genealogical information that
they usually contain. Unless you're from a very famous
family, or there is an individual in your family who is
famous, this handwritten information reduces a Bible's
value to a collector.
To a lesser extent, the
elaborateness of the binding will effect the price, though
the age of the binding usually has only a minimal effect, if
any, on the price. Most readers/collectors will actually
prefer a strong, fresh, new leather binding, to the worn and
somewhat less attractive ancient bindings… though some do
prefer the quaint, simple, somewhat distressed look of the
older bindings.
