Many translations have been made
over the years. In the early days of Christianity the Hebrew Old
Testament was usually read in a Greek translation (know as the
Septuagint). As the church spread, the need for translations grew,
taking the sacred text into widely accepted languages as well as local
tongues. The Bible was soon translated into Latin
(the language of the
Roman Empire
), Syriac (an Eastern Aramaic language), Coptic (Egyptian) and Arabic.
Unfortunately, translations were not always accurate and errors were
made. For this reason – and also because they did not want
“ordinary” people to be able to read the Bible – the (Roman)
Catholic Church banned any further translations and used only a
particular Latin text known as the Vulgate which had been
translated from the Greek around 400 AD. In the 1380s the first
English translations were made by John Wycliffe. By 1455 the printing
press was invented (Gutenberg), and mass production capabilities made
additional English versions and other language translations more
readily available.
The 'Delftse Bijbel' is generally considered to be
the first printed Dutch-language Bible in 1477.
The 'Statenvertaling' of 1637 (by many considered
the 'Dutch version of the King James) is still an often used
translation in the more conservative Christian circles. The name 'Statenvertaling'
is used because this translation was ordered by the Dutch Congress
(called 'the Staten Generaal'). The text was directly translated into
Dutch from the original languages Hebrew and Greek.
As next generations of Dutch translations date to
the 20th century (like the 'Nederlands Bijbelgenootschap' translation
of 1951 and 'de Goed Nieuws Bijbel' of 1983) all found Bible texts in
19th century and earlier Dutch Bibles is likely to be the 'Statenvertaling'

A note on the quality of our Antique Bibles:
We take great pride in the quality
of the Bibles we offer. We cannot replace missing
pages or undo water damage and so on, but we do make
sure that the binding of the pages as well as the
covers is in good (daily) useable condition.
Therefore most Bibles go through a restoration
process where the spines are cleaned of old failing
adhesive and loose pages or broken signatures are
restored/replaced. Old spine leather is reinforced
or replaced and spine reinforcement is applied with
new headbands and the cover hinge is extra
re-enforced. Also the cover leather is cleaned and
treated and if applicable the clasps are cleaned and
restored. This is not just a patch job! This process
brings the strength of the book back to its original
quality!
Below
we will first list our Dutch antique (family) Bibles ,
followed by various other Christian publications of the 18th
and 19th century in the Dutch language (click on the picture

This map is presented in the new scientific style popular at the

Mississippi from recent French discoveries. Terra Esonis stretches
from just above California nearly to Asia and the land of Yedso
above Japan. Tasman's discoveries relating to Australia, New Zealand
and Tasmania are shown in the Pacific. North and south polar
projections appear at the top and bottom between the spheres. In
each upper corner are illustrations of Ptolemaic theory on the
revolution of the planets and stars around the earth. In the lower
corners are diagrams of the movement of the Sun throughout varying
degrees of latitude, and a plan of the Sun, Moon and Earth during
lunar and solar eclipses. There are extensive notations in Dutch at

A COMPLETE Netherlands - Dutch-
New Testament Bible/Bijbel/Biblia
from 1885 in a very well preserved and
sound condition. It has an original full leather cover with gold stamped
and embossed
decorations and similarly exquisite spine. The
Bible contains the complete text of the New Testament ("Statenvertaling')
and is bound with "het Boek der Psalmen" (book
of psalms), with all Biblical psalms set to music and "Nevens
de
Gezangen bij de Hervormde Kerk van Nederland", a collection of hymns used in the Netherlands
Reformed Churches printed in 1875. The last section of this
Bible/Church Book
contains "Catechismus of Onderwijzing in the Christelijke Leer"
printed wit the "Liturgie der Hervormde Kerk van Nederland"
EXCELLENT (E).
The Bible's binding, spine are in well working working order.
All pages are present and in a very good condition. Clean pages. Some
pencil writing in the front but not in the text itself. Gold gilt
pages and cover decorations. Original binding and endpapers.
A folio size Netherlandse Family Bijbel (Dutch
language family Bible) of the
1890ies with a gold decorated/embossed leather
cover (showing scenes of the Bible) as well as gold embossed lettering and the text "BIJBEL"
on the front and spine and 2 silver, fully operational clasps,
printed by A.J. Holman in Philadelphia. This is a rare find as this
is one of the very FEW Dutch language Bibles printed by Holman here
in America. Holman is the publisher of the majority of the famous
illustrated family Bibles of the 1880ies-1890ies in English and also
printed quite a few in German and some of the Skandinavian languages
but only very few were ever translated to and printed in Dutch.
The
Bible contains the complete text of the Old and New Testament ("Statenvertaling').
It is extensively illustrated with full page exquisite
black and white (including a number of Gustave Dore galleries) and color engravings/illustrations (chromolithographs)
and color maps. The Bible also has a very extensive
commentary included with the text as chapter introductions and a very
large number of side notes and footnotes. Included are also the
Thorvaldsen and Hoffman Galleries of illustrations and a book of
Psalms and Hymns set to music plus a Catechism.
There is a blank presentation page in the front
and a marriage page and family records pages in the middle. Also
pages for family pictures at the end of the Bible.
The Bible's binding, and spine/covers have been restored (in the
past) and are in good/solid working order (handle with care as
always). All pages are present and the pages and illustrations are
in remarkably good condition. Original, never used family pages. No
writing anywhere. Some scuffs and wear to the covers.

antique (family) Bibles weigh about 1-5 lbs and have a size in the range of
10" x 8" to 5" x 3".
'Het Nieuwe Testament'
When describing our
Bibles we use the following definitions for
conditions:
*
EXCELLENT - not used very often, as this denotes a very,
very good book - in "as new" condition. * VERY GOOD -
no major faults but it is not perfect. * GOOD - below
the condition of Very Good with faults that are listed in the
description. * FAIR - the book will be looking quite tired & have quite a
bad problem that is listed in the description. * POOR - this
book has a major fault(s) that is described & possibly
rather mangled.
Generally, the factors that
most effect a Bible’s price are:
Age… a 1573 printing costs more than a 1673
printing.
Size… a 12 to 17 inch tall “pulpit
folio” costs more than a smaller Bible.
Extra Features… Uniqueness (first
edition), Psalter-Hymnals,
Almanac-Calendars, Apocrypha, Maps, Concordances,
Illustrations, decorative red ruling, etc.
Another
thing that detracts from the monetary value of a family
Bible is the handwritten genealogical information that
they usually contain. Unless you're from a very famous
family, or there is an individual in your family who is
famous, this handwritten information reduces a Bible's
value to a collector.
