A magnificent
(with an eye for so many details) illustrated Antique Family Bible in a
GOOD - VERY GOOD condition, stuffed with Biblical
information. The leather covers of this 1872 antique Bible by Albert
Leighton Rawson are
beautifully embossed in gold with various
Bible verses. The Bible has "six
hundred fine engravings and many maps." Besides
the complete presentation
of the Authorized (King James) Version of the Old and New
Testament and the Apocrypha, Concordance and Marginal References, this Bible
has a lot of additional information (text from the title page): "a
Clopedia of important explanatory matter ... ; Passages from the Old
Testament quoted by Jesus and His Apostles in the New Testament;
Chronological Index of the Books; The parables of Jesus; Miracles of
Christ Miracles of the Old Testament; Miracles in the Acts of the
Apostles; Discourses of Jesus; Parables in the Old Testament; Names
and titles of the Holy Spirit; Prayers in the Bible; Origin of
nations; Ten important periods in sacred history; The titles and names
of the Savior; Analysis of the Holy Bible; Symbolical language in the
Bible; Antiquated Word of Scripture explained; Alphabetical table of
proper names and their signification; the Psalms of David in Metre;
Bible prophecies; How to read the Bible through a year; History of the
Bible; and a complete dictionary of the Holy Bible." There is also a
section for recording the personal family events mentioning marriages,
births and deaths for the Taylor family going back to 1839, including
some photo's and a marriage certificate of 1866 plus a personal
letter.

This
Bible is in a GOOD, close to VERY GOOD condition. The bindings are
holding strong and the book feels solid, there are no loose pages. There is
no writing on of the pages, except for in the family register.
The gold embossing on the edges of the covers
and the gold gilt on the edges of the pages is still nicely
present . There are no ripped pages nor significant staining
(some age spots esp. at the beginning of the Bible), just a slight 'aging' of the paper. There is
some wear to the edges of the covers and areas on the leather. One of
the clasps to close the Bible is missing. All in all an interesting
antique book for collecting or study
