1884 Unmarked (Dore) Illustrated Catholic Douay Rheims Bible with clasps

A well preserved, beautifully (some Gustave Dore) illustrated Roman Catholic antique family Bible with an exquisite decorative cover with intricate artwork and a (gold gilt) cross surrounded by various gold-embossed decorations and two fully operational metal clasps, each in the shape of a cross plus gold illustrated spine. The text of this Bible is the Douay-Rheims Bible (or Doway Rheims Bible or D-R Bible), "translated from the Latin Vulgate", with "useful notes, critical, historical , controversial and explanatory ... by the late rev. Geo. Leo Haydock ... by the very Rev. F.C. Husenbeth". With various approbations of American (arch)bishops. The text covers the complete Old and New Testament as well as the books that are often referred to as the Apocrypha. To support the study of this Bible various notes and explanations are added to the text in chapter descriptions and footnotes and a number of additional sections, like an illustrated and comprehensive Dictionary, History of the Books of the Holy Catholic Bible and Life of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and various indices and tables.

At the middle of the Bible is a completely unmarked Holy Bonds of Matrimony page, family page section, and at the end a section for family portraits.

This Bible is in a VERY GOOD (VG) condition. The Bible's binding, spine and cover are in great shape (professionally restored and rebound) All pages are present, no writings, no tears (a few rough edges etc at the beginning and the end of the Bible), some foxing/coloring. No other kind of damages. The covers and spine shows minor age related scuffs and wear. A well preserved, "un-used" Bible ready to be used as a family treasure!
