A very nice 1596 Quarto-size,
beautifully bound (restored) Geneva (Breeches) Holy Bible in a VERY GOOD
and DAILY USABLE condition, containing the Old and New Testaments bound together with
the Apocrypha and ("Two right profitable and fruitfull")
Concordances. Printed in
1596 in London by the deputies of Christopher Barker.
Great condition (ready for daily
use) binding and
brown leather cover with 4-raised bands spine and the imprinted text "Geneva Bible"
and "1596".
The text of this Geneva Bible is complete,
including title pages (except for general title), prelims and
colophons. The Bible lacks the general title page and starts with a
rather unique frontispiece engraving (showing the victory of
religion over superstition and idolatry), followed by "to the
Christian reader" and "How to take profite...", followed by the first page of Genesis. After the
Apocrypha there is the engraved New Testament title page, "the fumme of the whole Scripture of the bookes of
the olde and newe Teftament" and next "Certaine queftions and
anfweres touching the doctrine of Predeftination, the vfe of Gods
worde and Sacraments", "the names and order of all Bookes", followed by "The holy Gofpel of Iefus Chrift,
according to Matthew". After the book of Revelation there are "Tvvo
right profitable and fruitfull Concordances, or large and ample
Tables Alphabeticall" (with title page), these are two extensive
concordances on "the interpretation of the Hebrue, Caldean, Greeke,
and Latine wordes" and "all fuch other principall wordes
and matters". The concordances are complete and end with Barker's
colophon. There are various engravings and decorated chapter
initials throughout.

This QUARTO sized Geneva Bible is in
an overall VERY GOOD and VERY USABLE condition. Complete Bible text,
only the general title is missing (see above). Very minor wear, soiling,
smaller tears, rough edges etc. Very clean pages, some previous
ownership scribbles but no in the Bible text. Decent margins around the pages
(some headers have limited shaving, see pictures below). Some text
loss in the corner of the first page of Malachi.
Overall a true antique Geneva
and a ready-to-use daily reader!
