1628 King James quarto sized Bible
in an overall GOOD to VERY GOOD - VERY USABLE condition,
published by Bonham Norton and John Bill, printers to the King. The
Bible is bound in a later 19th century 1/2 red morocco, complete
with gilt title.
Bible starts at Holy Bible (Old
Testament), rear of blank pages contain handwritten genealogy on
rear from late 1600s-late 1700s of the Dodd and Simmons families.
Next is the Apocrypha, complete with woodcut header, then New
Testament Title (1628) .
Both original engraved titles are present. The Bible is printed in
black letter style; two columns with frequent notes and marginal
commentary; the margins have been trimmed on most pages, some pages
have some minor parts affected. There are also some woodcuts in the
text, as well as chapter headed illuminated lettering.
Title: "The Holy Bible, containing the
Old Testament, and the New: Newly Tranflated out of the Originall
Tongues: And with the former tranflations diligently compared and revifed, By his Majefties fpeciall commandement,
Appointed to be read in Churches. Printed at London
By Bonham Norton and John Bill, Printers to the Kings moft Excellent Maieftie.
M.D.C.XXVIII." Both this general title page as the New Testament title
page is a woodcut-engraved title with words in a sort of heart shape
in the center; woodcuts depict 12 tribes of Israel and 12 disciples.
Various woodcuts, colophons and decorated first chapter initials.

The Bible condition on the outside
is nice; besides a few scuffs and light bumping; this Bible has held
up nicely! Complete Bible text
with titles. Within, the Bible has remained in nice shape; the
front hinge is reinforced and the rear is strong but showing signs
of splitting. The margins are trimmed, as expected with these
versions. A few pages in the preface have some corner damage,
and there are scattered minor tears and repairs with hardly any
affect to text. There are pen inscriptions in the book (mentioned
above), probably from the late 1600s- mid 1700s.
An early and very affordable King
James Bible!
