A pre-Civil War Roman Catholic Bible. This enormous 1857 Catholic antique family Bible has thick leather covered boards embossed with a cross.  The text of this Bible is the so called Douay-Rheims Bible (or Doway Rheims Bible or D-R Bible), "translated from the Latin Vulgate ... with useful notes, critical, historical, controversial, and explanatory, selected from the most eminent commentators, and the most able critics, by the Rev. Geo. Leo Haydock." Numerous full page engravings and illustrations. Contains various approbations of American bishops and archbishops. The family section has some entries for the Riker family. This Bible is in a VERY GOOD condition, it has been professionally restored  fairly recently: the spine and the covers) and its corners) have been rebacked and the original leather covers were mostly restored. Some of the pages in the front of the Bible were restored as well. Thanks to this the binding is now solid it can be open and read like a new book! All pages seem to be present, there are (child?) pencil scribbles mostly at some of the blank pages (hardly ever in the text) , no tears, some foxing/coloring/age spots. This exceptionally beautifully illustrated (early) Antique Family Bible with pristine ornate brass corners and fully functional metal clasps is in an  'AS-NEW' EXCELLENT condition. By far one of the most beautiful Bibles of the second part of the 19th century that I have ever seen! It has a number of very attractive, very rare (for this publishing date) and pristinely preserved color lithographs of original paintings. "The National Comprehensive Family Bible ... with the commentaries of Scott and Henry, also containing many thousand critical and explanatory notes selected from the Standard Authors of Europe and America. The commentaries condensed and the whole edited by the Rev. John Eadie, DD., LL.D., professor of Biblical Literature to the United Presbyterian Church." Apart from the Old and New Testament, there is a beautifully (color) decorated, unmarked family portrait section, a Chronological Index, Biblical Cyclopedia and various tables. The family section pages (marriage, births, deaths...) are CLEAN (never written on) and EXCEPTIONALLY beautiful !!  The binding is has been professionally strengthened and is solid. The book can be open and closed without any problems or concerns. There is NO writing. The book itself covered in a heavy brown leather with rounded beveled edges, Complete and undamaged metal brass corners and two brass clasps. All plates have tissue guards in excellent order. No missing pages nor any staining nor any writing, very clean paper, no coloring or age spots. This large European HOLY BIBLE is in super condition with no damages, only a few very minor age-related scratches on the covers but they don't disturb the quality of this antique Bible.  ...more

A rather unique Bible, as this one is like a 'transitional' book between the pre-1870's 'regular' Bibles that were printed from the moment printing technology was discovered and developed and the 'new' generation of what we now know as the large size, comprehensive and extensively illustrated family (pictorial) Bibles. This (January) 1872 Bible is an 'in-between' size (between 'pocket' and 'table' size) and has about 15-20 or so full page "finely executed maps and engravings on steel"  (plus a significant number of smaller illustrations). Lots of extra sections. Gold embossed leather cover and spine.  The family record section is unmarked. Strong binding of the paper, this thick book works "well". No markings or writings. Paper is off white (showing its age), hardly any age spots, a few small damages on some pages. A vintage, antique William W. Harding's edition of a 1874 attractively illustrated family Holy Family Bible. The leather covers have a vibrant gold stamping of Jesus' statement that He is "the Resurrection and the Life". The Bible also has many gorgeous and beautiful (some color lithographs) illustrations to enjoy. As per the title page: "The  Holy Bible containing the  Old and New Testaments ... with marginal references, apocrypha, concordance and psalms." This Bible is in a overall GOOD+ condition. The covers and hinges have scuffs, wear and damaged corners but hold together tightly and the book can be easily opened and used/read. Dr. Challoner". A 1878 beautifully gold-decorated (with Bible scenes) leather Bible with 2500 illustrations, with numerous gorgeous full page black and white and many color engravings and maps. Besides a compete Authorized Version of the Old Testament plus the Apocrypha this Bible also contains a parallel presentation of the New Testament in King James and Revised Version, and many additional sections! Also including a family record (which is completely  unmarked, as is the rest of this Bible).  The pages are generally clean with some occasional spotting throughout, a few pages have a small tear. One page is loose from the binding. A beautifully illustrated, ornate black Morocco leather 'Child' Bible. The leather covers of this 1870ies Bible are embossed in gold and the pages are gold-gilt. This Bible "endeavors to put into consecutive form such portions of Holy Scripture as seem best adapted to the wants and capacities of childhood."  This special Bible has "upwards of two hundred original illustrations" (mostly full page). As per the title page: "The Child's Bible: being a consecutive arrangement of the narrative and other portions of the Holy Scripture, in the words of the Authorised Version." This 'Child" Bible is in a overall close to EXCELLENT condition.  There is NO writing nor did we notice any damages on any of the pages. "The National Comprehensive Family Bible ... with the commentaries of Scott and Henry, and containing also many thousand critical and explanatory notes selected from the Standard Authors of Europe and America..." Apart from the Old and New Testament, there is a beautifully (color) decorated, unmarked family portrait section, a Chronological Index, Biblical Cyclopedia, the Psalms of David in Metre and various tables. The family section pages (marriage, births, deaths...) are have some notes on the Hunter and Wilson family. The binding is solid. This huge and bulking, extensively illustrated (full page black and white engravings as well as a number of chromolithographs) Roman Catholic antique family Bible has a decorative cover which consists of 3/8" thick leather covered boards embossed and gilded with intricate artwork, and depicts a cross and a number of scenes from the Bible (including the Last Supper). The text of this Bible is the so called Douay-Rheims Bible (or Doway Rheims Bible or D-R Bible), which is an English translation from the Latin Vulgate. The text covers the complete Old and New Testament as well as the books that are often referred to as the Apocrypha (which are part of the canon of the Roman Catholic Old Testament). To support the study of this Bible various notes and explanations are added to the text in chapter descriptions and footnotes. This beautiful - very well preserved, almost pristine (!) - Roman Catholic antique family Bible has an exquisite decorative cover which consists of  thick leather covered boards embossed and with intricate artwork and a (gold gilt) cross surrounded by various gold-embossed decorations and two fully operational metal clasps, each in the shape of a cross. Gold gilt pages.  The text of this Bible is the so called Douay-Rheims Bible (or Doway Rheims Bible or D-R Bible), which is an English translation from the Latin Vulgate with "notes, critical, historical, and explanatory, selected from the most eminent commentators and critics by the Rev. George Haydock, revised and  corrected under the superintendence of the very Rev. Frederick Canon Oakeley". The text covers the complete Old and New Testament as well as the books that are often referred to as the Apocrypha. To support the study of this Bible various notes and explanations are added to the text in chapter descriptions and footnotes plus various indexes and tables.  Numerous (full page) engraved illustrations. The Bible's binding has been professionally restored and its spine and cover are in great shape. All pages are present, no writings, no tears (a few minor ones on a few pages at the beginning and end), no foxing/coloring or any other kind of damages. The covers and spine shows some fairly minor age related scuffs and wear. Metal clasps are in great working order. An extraordinary preserved, "un-used" Bible!

A 1884 beautifully gold-decorated embossed (in an exceptional fine, bright and fresh shape) leather parallel Bible, with numerous gorgeous (Gustave Doré illustrated) full page black and white (and some color pages and maps) engravings published by Chandler Bros, Rockford, Illinois.  The pages have gilded edges. Besides a parallel presentation of the complete texts of the Authorized Version and Revised Version it also present the text of the Apocrypha and includes: "a complete Concordance; a history of ancient Biblical manuscripts; the earliest printed editions of the Bible; a history of the revision of the Bible etc." and much more. The family pages preserve the history of the Cavett and Woody family of Monroe, Iowa. The leather on the covers look fresh and very well taken care of with minimal light wear to the hinges. The binding is still tight but as it is old it requires the Bible to be handled/opened/closed with care! There is NO writing on the pages (except the family pages). There are NO ripped or missing pages, just a slight occasional 'aging' of the paper. There is some minor wear to the edges of the covers and areas on the leather.  ...more

Besides a  complete presentation of  the Authorized  Version , this Bible contains a number of additional sections. It is beautifully illustrated with "Doré's Gallery of Scripture Illustrations" and contains a (clean -unmarked) family register. The cover/spine has been restored in the past and is solid as well as the binding as the Bible opens easily and the pages are bind solidly, ready to be used. In this Bible both the King James Version as well as the (1881) Revised Version are presented in parallel columns. Additionally this comprehensive Bible contains: "a complete concordance, embracing every passage of Scripture in the largest editions, the Psalms in Metre, 100,000 marginal references and readings, Dr. WM. Smith's standard Bible Dictionary ... The Bible has a (gold) embossed five-raised-band spine and decorated covers, even the pages have decorated edges. As per the title page: "Parallel-column edition of the Holy Bible containing the Authorized and Revised Versions of the Old and New Testaments arranged in parallel columns ... copious marginal references, chronological tables, and many important and valuable aids to the study of the Holy Scriptures, written to increase the interest in and simplify the Word of God." There is also a new used - unmarked - family section. The binding is solid. There is NO writing. All plates have tissue guards in excellent order. No missing pages, nor any staining nor any writing, just a very slight 'aging' of the paper. An extensively illustrated and professionally re-bound  Antique Family Bible in a well-preserved condition with functional metal clasp. Attractive embossed covers with gold stamping ("Holy Bible") and raised bands ("Holy Bible - parallel New Testament"). Besides the complete presentation of the Authorized (King James) Version of the Old testament and Apocrypha, both the Revised Version and the KJV are presented in parallel for the New Testament. Many extra's are included, like color maps, gallery of Scripture illustrations, comprehensive (illustrated) dictionary of the Bible, biographical and historical essays on each Bible book, parables of our Lord, chronological index, alphabetical table of the proper names, Bible text-book, concordance and so on. Many full page (Gustave Doré and others) illustrations, color plates and maps. The family record pages give the history of the Ackerson and Vogt family (you can obviously just removed those pages if you like...). A beautifully illustrated and fully 'loaded'  Antique Family Bible. This 1890 luxury Bible contains the Old and New testament in both the Authorized (King James) Version as well as the Revised Version and is profusely illustrated with over "2000 plates, full page color plates and maps" (including illustrations of the renowned Gustave Doré). There are numerous study aids in the comprehensive Bible. The Bible itself is in a VERY GOOD condition. It has been professionally rebound in the past and is a solid book. Unfortunately there are heavy embellishments to the front cover and spine. Because of this we have downgraded the condition of this Bible to GOOD. This problem could be easily fixed by swapping the front and back cover (which is undamaged). Pages are clean, somewhat tanned through age. Two nice metal clasps to close the Bible. Head pins are tight on the clasps , no give or slip. The family pages have been filled out by the Hewitt family of Blossburg, going back to 1874. ...more ...

A vintage, antique R.S. Peale Co's edition of a 1890 exquisitely illustrated family Holy Family Bible. The leather covers have vibrant gold stamping. The Bible also has many gorgeous and beautiful illustrations to enjoy. As per the title page: "The Pronouncing Edition of the Holy Bible containing the Authorized and Revised Versions of the Old and New Testaments arranged in Parallel Columns, giving the correct pronunciation of every Scripture proper name contained in the Bible by Prof. S.W. Williams; Complete Concordance: marginal references; chronological tables; a history of ancient Biblical manuscripts, with fac-similes of the same; the earliest printed editions of the Bible; a history of the revision of the Bible etc.".
