A note on the quality of our Antique Bibles:

We take great pride in the quality of the Bibles we offer. We cannot replace missing pages or undo water damage and so on, but we do make sure that the binding of the pages as well as the covers is in good (daily) useable condition. Therefore many of our Bibles go through a restoration process where the spines are cleaned of old failing adhesive and loose pages or broken signatures are restored/replaced. Old spine leather is reinforced or replaced and spine reinforcement is applied with new headbands and the cover hinge is extra re-enforced. Also the cover leather is cleaned and treated. This is not just a patch job! This process brings the strength of the book back to its original quality!

The following antique vintage Christian Bibles are presented in order of date of publication  (click on the picture or the book title for more detailed information):

1568 Extremely Rare Second Quarto Edition Geneva Bible, printed At Geneva by Jean Crespin with Apocrypha, tables and metrical Psalter - exquisite binding

quarto, 9 x 6 x 3.25" thick

VERY GOOD (VG) condition.

This is a well preserved and exceptionally rare Geneva Bible, only the second quarto edition ever printed: printed 'At Geneva' by John Crespin (Jean Crespin), one of the printers in Geneva closely associated with the Reformers movement! This is one of the very few editions of the Geneva Bible that was actually printed in Geneva (hence the Bible's name) BEFORE printing of this Bible was 'moved' to England and monopolized by Christopher Barker.

Museum quality restoration with exquisite binding in contemporary 16th century style with corner pieces (8), center pieces (2) and brass/leather clasps - this is how a luxury edition of this Bible would have been issued! With the original New Testament title page (1568) and the title to the complete Metrical Psalter (which is by the way the first time this metrical Psalter was printed and included with a Geneva, 1569) and it includes "The Catechism by John Calvin"

Bible text is complete, except for it lacks the general title and some one of the prelims (see pictures below) and 2 leaves in Joshua. The Old Testament is followed by the complete Apocrypha and the first table (alphabetical names in the Bible, in later editions this section was moved to after the New Testament). Next the New Testament title and the complete New Testament, followed by the second table ('concordance').

Just before the Psalter is an overview included of Paul's life and his writings. The title page of the Psalter is followed by "a Treatise made by Athanasius the Great", various hymns and the complete book of Psalmes (with musical bars). Next a section of prayers and "the catechisme or maner to teach childred the Christian Religion ... Made by the excellent Doctor and Paftor in Chriftes Churche, Iohn Caluin" (this is all COMPLETE!).

Printed in Roman Type with double columns, includes a set of 26 in-text engravings.

It is also worth mentioning that in this edition the Apocryphal book ' the Prayer of Manasseh" is actually placed in the main Old Testament section immediately after 2 Chronicles) instead of with the other Apocryphal books.

The whole New Testament (translated by Theodore Beza) - including the famous Geneva commentary - is printed in single column and large Black letter font - very legible and uncommon as almost all Bibles were printed double column in those days. Also this is a larger that usual quarto printing, the book is 10" x 7.5", significantly larger than other Geneva quarto's.

Bible text is complete, The New Testament title is provided in a high quality facsimile, other prelims are lacking. The last page of Revelation end with a printing of Barker's device. The New Testament text is followed by a complete table/concordance, ending with the 1583 dated colophon.

1717 Monumental and Awe-inspiring ('Vinegar') Holy Bible, also known as a 'Baskett full of errors', beautifully illustrated and red-underlined

large folio 20" x 13" x 4.5" thick

VERY GOOD (VG) condition.

Gorgeous and truly magnificent: The famous and monumental ‘Vinegar Bible,’ also known as the ‘Baskett full of errors,’ and generally acknowledged as the most magnificent Bible printed in England. The text is the King James Version of the English Bible and was printed in large folio by J. Baskett at Oxford in 1717-16. The volume is adorned with numerous beautiful engraved headpieces and tailpieces depicting scenes from the Bible (about 60 in total, about 1/4 of a page each), further adorned with engraved initials, includes the famous typographical error in the headline of Luke XX that reads “The Parable of the Vinegar”

Herbert (#942) calls it "A magnificent edition, printed in large type. With many plates at the beginning and end of books, engraved in steel from the designs of various artists. Some of the initial letters are similarly engraved ... "

This edition is the more elaborately illustrated 'A' variant with Two general titles, the first one - engraved by Du-Bose- represents Moses writing the first words of Genesis. The second full general title (engraved in black and red) reads as follows:

“The Holy Bible, Containing the Old Testament and the New: Newly Translated out of the Original Tongues: And with the former Translations Diligently Compared and Revised. By His Majesty’s Special Command. Appointed to be Read in Churches. Oxford, Printed by John Baskett, Printer to the King’s Most Excellent Majesty, for Great Britain; and to the University. M DCC XVII [1717].”

Famously, John Baskett set out to print the most beautiful, largest, and finest illustrated Bible ever printed, and he largely achieved his vision with this masterpiece of typography and illustration, printed in 1717 (Old Testament and Apocrypha) and 1716 (New Testament).

Equally famously, however, the glory of the typography was not matched by the accuracy of the proofreading, and the text is filled errors. The most famous of these errors was the misprint in the headline of Luke XX, which ought to have read “The Parable of the Vineyard,” but instead read “The Parable of the Vinegar.” As a result, this edition of the Bible has, since its first appearance, been known as the ‘Vinegar Bible.’ The bounteous nature of the edition’s misprints has also led to its appellation as the ‘Baskett full of errors’ (playing upon the printer’s name).

The volume is complete in all respects. It comprises the complete text of the Old Testament, Apocrypha, and New Testament, along with the two title pages and the preliminaries. Both titles display beautiful engravings, with the general title showing a particularly fine view of Oxford. The volume measures about 20" x 13" x 4.5"

The Bible is completely red ruled (by hand) throughout!

A rare and sound example of this rare Bible. ...more...

This edition was authorized for use in the pulpit, and this copy very likely was so used, however not very much as it the pages almost are 'as new' - even though they are almost 300 years old!

The volume is complete in all respects. It comprises the complete text of the Old Testament, Apocrypha, and New Testament, along with the two title pages and the preliminaries. Both titles display beautiful engravings, with the general title showing a particularly fine view of Oxford.

Collates complete. With engraved frontis & printed title. Separate New Testament printed title. A very good crisp copy in the main. A little damp staining to the first dozen leaves or so. A couple of leaves with small lower inner marginal professional page repairs. The vast majority of the bible in very good solid & clean condition. Minor marks/blemishes or light browning in the odd place. Engraved head & tail pieces to each book of the bible.

Bound in full contemporary black calf.  Rebacked in an antique style. Black calf spine with a gilt lettered antique style label, raised bands.

A very handsome & solid period binding.

1828 Complete two volume Bible set with Fore Edge paintings of Bethlehem and Jerusalem

6 1/2" x 4" x 1" each

VERY GOOD (VG)  condition.

1828 The Holy Bible (complete in 2 volumes, volume 1: Genesis - Job, volume 2: Psalms - Revelation) containing the Old and New Testaments. On the edge of each book is a one of a kind fore edge painting of a scene showing the towns and landscape of Bethlehem (volume 1) and Jerusalem (volume 2).

A fore-edge painting is decoration painted on the edges of a book’s pages by artist. The fore-edge of a book is like the 'fourth edge' - not the spine, the top, or the bottom edge, but the outside edge that a reader would use to thumb through the pages. Originally, this edge was only used for identification, to more easily spot a book when the edges faced outward. As these paintings were done by hand, usually on request of a more wealthy buyer, it makes this Bible absolutely unique, there is no copy of this Bible with this painting available anywhere else!

The fore-edge paintings are amazing, but very hard to photograph, we did our best, but it is so much nicer when you hold one of the books. ...more details ...

American Bible History: A GORGEOUS well preserved 1846 Harper Illuminated Bible. Beautiful gold decorated front and back cover and 5-band raised spine with the text "Holy Bible" and showing various beautiful gold decorations and illustrations.

Beautiful gold decorated red leather cover showing the conquest of  Jericho - VERY NICE! Beautiful closing clasp.

Dated 1846 with, at foot of title, "entered ... in the year 1843 by Harper and Brothers". Frontispiece and illuminated title to each Testament. Table, Index and Concordance at the end. With Apocrypha.

The work was originally announced in 1843, and was issued in 54 numbers of 25ct each. J.A. Adams, the engraver, is credited with having taken the first electrotype in America from a woodcut. Many illustrations in this Bible are done this way. Artists were engaged for more than six years (!) in the preparation of the designs and engravings included in this Bible, at a cost of over $20,000 (a small fortune in those days!).

"This Harper publication was a remarkable production in its time and place, and retains its importance in the annals of American bookmaking. W.J. Linton, noted wood-engraver and author, knew 'no other book like this, so good, so perfect in all its undertakes.' The illustrations are like picturings of history, as are so many of the old European Biblical paintings and illustrations." [Hill's catalogue #1161]

VERY GOOD (VG) to EXCELLENT (E)  condition.

1871 Bible or Church Book with hidden under the gold gilt an ASTOUNDING vertical fore-edge done by Martin Frost, showing Moses receiving the Ten Commandments. It shows Moses holding the two tablets  high above his head, with people fleeing in terror. This is a one of a kind and is signed by Martin Frost.

This fore edge painting was done by Martin Frost, one of the (if not THE) most renowned fore edge painting artist of the 20th century.

The Bible itself is published in 1871 in New York.  It is a hard cover and detailed (embossed - black on black) on the front and the back. It has also a metal clasp that snaps together to keep the book from opening. The book has some very little rubbing on the bottom spine. As you open the book, the first page is dated Dec. 26, '73 and shows a person's name, and this was presented to this person by his teacher. The next two pages are dated and signed by the owner of this book detailing events in his life. These two pages are loose but still attached.

The fore-edge paintings are amazing, but very hard to photograph, we did our best, but they are so much nicer when you hold the book ...more

Lord's Prayer in a Antique family Bible

When describing our Bibles we use the following definitions for conditions:

* EXCELLENT - not used very often, as this denotes a very, very good book - in "as new" condition.
* VERY GOOD - no major faults but it is not perfect.
* GOOD - below the condition of Very Good with faults that are listed in the description.
* FAIR - the book will be looking quite tired & have quite a bad problem that is listed in the description.
* POOR - this book has a major fault(s) that is described & possibly rather mangled.

The original manuscripts of the Old Testament (in Hebrew) and the New Testament (in Greek) of the Holy Bible have long been lost, however thanks to accurate copying by generations of scribes of the Old Testament and thousands of preserved old manuscripts and codices of the New Testament we can be assured that the original text has been accurately preserved.

Many translations have been made over the years. In the early days of Christianity the Hebrew Old Testament was usually read in a Greek translation (know as the Septuagint). As the church spread, the need for translations grew, taking the sacred text into widely accepted languages as well as local tongues.  The Bible was soon translated into Latin (the language of the Roman Empire ), Syriac (an Eastern Aramaic language), Coptic (Egyptian) and Arabic. Unfortunately, translations were not always accurate and errors were made. For this reason – and also because they wanted to discourage “ordinary” people to read the Bible – the (Roman) Catholic Church banned any further translations and used only a particular Latin text known as the Vulgate which had been translated from the Greek around 400 AD. In the 1380s the first English translations were made by John Wycliffe. By 1455 the printing press was invented (Gutenberg), and mass production capabilities made additional English versions and other language translations more readily available.

First issued from the press of Rouland Hall in 1560, the Geneva Bible was the first to print each verse as a paragraph, and to print in italics words not in the original text. The Geneva Bible's origin was due to a body of English Reformers of the Puritan Party who sought refuge in Geneva from the persecution of Queen Mary. This was the Bible of Shakespeare, John Milton, John Bunyan and Oliver Cromwell. The Pilgrims and Puritans brought it with them to America.

In 1568, a translation known as the Bishops' Bible was introduced. Despite 19 editions being printed between 1568 and 1606, this Bible, referred to as the “rough draft of the King James Version”, never gained much of a foothold of popularity among the people. With the death of Queen Elizabeth I, Prince James VI of Scotland became King James I of England. The Protestant clergy approached the new King in 1604 and convinced him of their desire for a new translation to replace the Bishops' Bible.

This resulted in the combined effort of about fifty scholars to produce "translation to end all translations" (for a while at least)  From 1605 to 1606 the scholars engaged in private research. From 1607 to 1609 the work was assembled. In 1610 the work went to press, and in 1611 the first of the huge (16 inch tall) pulpit folios known today as "The 1611 King James Bible" came off the printing press.

The Geneva Bible

The Geneva Bible was the primary Bible of the 16th Century Protestant movement and was the Bible used by William Shakespeare, John Knox, John Donne, and John Bunyan, author of Pilgrim's Progress. It was one of the Bibles taken to America on the Mayflower, it was used by many English Dissenters, and it was still respected by Oliver Cromwell's soldiers at the time of the English Civil War.

What makes this version of the Holy Bible singularly unique in world history is that, for the very first time, a mechanically-printed, mass-produced Bible was made available directly to the general public which came with a variety of scriptural study guides and aids (collectively called an apparatus), which included verse citations which allow the reader to cross – reference one verse with numerous relevant verses in the rest of the Bible, introductions to each book of the Bible which acted to summarize all of the material that each book would cover, maps, tables, woodcut illustrations, indexes, as well as other includehe Geneva translators chose the term "breeches" for the coverings referenced in Genesis 3:7: "Then the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked, and they sewed fig tree leaves together, and made them selves breeches." Tyndale and Coverdale had previously ;; and the King James translators later followed Tyndale and Coverdale and used "aprons." This name, "Breeches Bible," was born out of the peculiarity of the term "breeches" and the implausibility that their coverings were in fact "breeches." The 1562 Geneva Bible was called the "Place-makers Bible" because of an erroneous rendering of Matthew 5:9: "Blessed are the place-makers." Later, the Geneva Bible also became known as the "Pilgrims Bible" because the Pilgrims brought Geneva Bibles when they sailed to the New World in 1620

The Bishops' Bible

The thorough Calvinism of the Geneva Bible (not so much displayed in the translation, which was acknowledged to be an excellent one, but in the marginal notes), offended the high-church party of the Church of England, to which almost all of its bishops subscribed. However, they were aware that the Great Bible of 1539 —which was the only version then legally authorized for use in Anglican worship—was severely deficient; in that much of the Old Testament was translated from the Latin Vulgate, rather than from the original Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek. In an attempt to replace the objectionable Geneva translation, they circulated one of their own, which became known as the Bishops' Bible.
The Bishops' Bible was first published in 1568, but was then re-issued in an extensively revised form in 1572

The King James Bible

As the sun began to set on the reign of Elizabeth I (1558-1603), within Parliament a draft is drawn up under an Act of Parliament for the sole purpose of a new version of the Bible: "An act for the reducing of diversities of bibles now extant in the English tongue to one settled vulgar translated from the original."

The resulting (Authorized) King James Version is an English translation of the Bible from the original languages (Hebrew and Greek) begun in 1604 and first published in 1611 by the Church of England. No book has had greater influence on the English language or on the English character. For the next three hundred years the majority of English men and women heard it read aloud Sunday after Sunday and, until within living memory, a very large proportion of people read the Bible with steady, life-long devotion in their own homes. And this great quality was carried to America, where its influence has hardly been less. All antique family Bibles published before 1881 are exclusive in the Authorized or King James translation.

The Revised Version

The Revised Version (or English Revised Version) of the Bible is a late 19th-century British revision of the King James Version the RV's publication, the nearly 300-year old King James Version was still the only viable English Bible in Victorian England. The RV, therefore, is regarded as the forerunner of the entire modern translation tradition. Other important enhancements introduced in the RV include arrangement of the text into paragraphs, printing Old Testament poetry in indented poetic lines (rather than as prose), and the inclusion of marginal notes to alert the reader to variations in wording in ancient manuscripts.

What determines the price of an antique Bible?

Generally, the factors that most effect a Bible’s price are:

  • Age… a 1573 printing costs more than a 1673 printing.
  • Size… a 12 to 17 inch tall “pulpit folio” costs more than a smaller Bible.
  • Extra Features…  Uniqueness (first edition), Psalter-Hymnals, Almanac-Calendars, Apocrypha, Maps, Concordances, Illustrations, decorative red ruling, etc.
  • Another thing that detracts from the monetary value of a family Bible is the handwritten genealogical information that they usually contain. Unless you're from a very famous family, or there is an individual in your family who is famous, this handwritten information reduces a Bible's value to a collector.

To a lesser extent, the elaborateness of the binding will effect the price, though the age of the binding usually has only a minimal effect, if any, on the price. Most readers/collectors will actually prefer a strong, fresh, new leather binding, to the worn and somewhat less attractive ancient bindings… though some do prefer the quaint, simple, somewhat distressed look of the older bindings.
