5. More Proof for Divine Inspiration (2)

Jesus answered, ‘I did tell you, but you do not believe. The miracles I do in my Father’s name speak for me, but you do not believe because you are not my sheep. My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand.’”

John 10:25-28

Exhibit #17: The Testimony of Jesus Christ

During the transfiguration of Jesus (Luke 9:28-36, Mark 9:2-13, Matthew 17:1-13) Peter, John and James heard God’s voice proclaim: “This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him” (emphasis added).

So, what does Jesus, the Son of God, say about the divine inspiration of the Bible? Did He teach that the Scriptures are God’s Word? Clearly and beyond any doubt, yes! He taught precisely that. Obviously, during Jesus’ life, only the Old Testament was available, but on many occasions He referred to these Scriptures, confirming their accuracy and affirming their inspiration:

  • “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.  I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished” (Matthew 5:17-18).
  • “Jesus replied, ‘You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God’” (Matthew 22:29).
  • Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him” (John 7:28).
  • It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from him comes to me” (John 6:45).

Clearly Jesus taught the Scriptures are inspired. To reject His claim, one must reject the authority of Jesus. The evidence we have discussed in the earlier chapters about the truth of the Bible and the identity of Jesus as the Son of God shows conclusively that Jesus has God’s full authority (see Matthew 28:18-20). The argument then becomes: [5]

  • If what Jesus taught is true,
  • And Jesus taught the Bible is inspired,
  • Then it follows that it is true that the Bible is inspired by God.
