We experience our universe as a “three-and-a-half” dimensional world; that is, three space dimensions (length, width, height) and a “half of a” time dimension (we can only move forward). However – is that really all there is? Or is that just our limited ability to experience our world?
Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s theoretical physicists recognized that there simply was not enough room in the dimensions of length, width, height, and time for the symmetries demanded by both gravity and quantum mechanics.
In 1996 a team led by Andrew Strominger discovered that only in ten space-time dimensions (nine space, one time) gravity and quantum mechanics could successfully coexist at all epochs of cosmic history. This theoretical calculation was subsequently supported by several observational confirmations.
The picture of creation that arises out of this theory proceeds as follows:
Presently, the six tiny space dimensions are very tightly wrapped up around the three large space dimensions. Except for the interiors of black holes, the tiny space dimensions play no role today in the dynamics of the universe.
If God created the universe, He caused the Big Bang and limited human perception to a three-and-a-half dimensional world. However, nothing limits Him to move around in this 10 (or even more) dimensional world. This includes full control over the time dimension. He created time, and it sets no limitations upon Him.
This extra-dimensional concept could help us understand many concepts humans struggle with, such as:
· For God, time is a full dimension, not only a one-way dimension; therefore time has no limitations for Him and He can move freely back and forth in the past and future and foresee the future.
· God can be close to each of us all the time in an extra-dimensional world without us ever knowing it. Imagine the surface of a table. Suppose you are limited to only live in the two dimensional world of the table surface, so you can only move over the surface (you are a “flatlander”), but can never go up or down. Your perception is limited to this surface and its two dimensions. You cannot be aware of anyone who lives in three dimensions, unless that person is on the table surface. If that person was just 0.0001 inch above the table surface, just above you, you would not be able to see him (as you cannot experience anything above you), but he would see you and be very close to you.
· The spiritual world (angels, demons) and even the location of heaven and hell could all be simply in another set of dimensions. Death must be just a step into this other dimensional world. For people in heaven, time has no meaning or limitation.
