Do you need to have Blind Faith to be a Christian?

You do not need blind faith

That is what many folks believe. They are under the - false - impression that science, archaeology and centuries of scholarship have destroyed the foundations of Christianity. They reason there is no longer the need for a Creator, since evolution explains our existence. They believe, that the texts of the Bible have been corrupted over the centuries and its stories have been discredited by recent archaeological discoveries. 

As per recent Gallup polls it appears that not only fewer people than in the generation before us believe that the Bible is the Word of God, but also that the more education a person has, the less likely he/she is to believe in the Bible. Is that because the more educated have better reasons to reject the Bible or is it because they are more and longer indoctrinated with the 'gospel of science'? I think the latter!

The statistics are alarming: over 70%, that is almost 3 out of every 4, young Christians walk away from their faith when they are in the first years of college! These are young adults who were born and raised in Christian families. They went to church with their parents and likely attended church classes and youth groups. Perhaps they even went to Christian schools or were home schooled. Still, by the time they get to ‘live on their own’, which in most cases is when they go to college; they walk away from their faith, likely to never return again.

This is a grueling statistic. This is not just another poll we can ignore, but this is a society changing phenomenon. I know this to be true, not just from looking at it, but also from living it. I was part of this ‘walking away from the faith’ phenomenon in the 1960ies and 1970ies in the Netherlands. Being raised in a Christian family and spending my young years with my parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles ‘in church’ I, and most of my fellow students, lost my faith in high school/college. The result: the Netherlands, which was once founded on solid Christian values and considered for centuries to be a sound Christian nation, is now a country where about 50% of its citizens claim to be atheist and there are now possibly more active Muslims than Christians!

Does the Bible contradict Evolution?

In chapter 11 of Frequently Avoided Questions, Chuck Smith and Matt Whitlock ask the question, "Does the Bible contradict evolution?" Too often in their opposition to evolution Christians seem to engage in pseudoscience. I do not believe that God meant for the early chapters of Genesis to be read as science. They are to be read as theology—telling us about the great Creator-God. The most significant issue in understanding the Bible is our hermeneutics— how we interpret what is written in the Bible. In Biblical interpretation we need to start by discovering the Biblical author's original meaning and how he was understood by his original audience.

Why do we assume that science keeps people from believing in Christ? A larger issue that keeps people from following Christ is the way they have been treated by Christians. Creationists do not have a good record in our arguments with Evolutionists. A problem with scientific creationism within the public education system is that creationism is bound up with doctrinal issues which do not apply to non-believers.

Naturalistic processes may account for some of the complexity and diversity of living things. A problem with evolution is that it often purports to prove more than it actually does. Evolutionism itself is not science. When evolution is perceived as an all-encompassing theory that explains everything we believe and do as the result of natural selection, we leave science and find ourselves in philosophy. As a worldview evolutionism has insurmountable difficulties. Science cannot explain everything, and science can be compatible with the teaching of Scripture. We do not need to make a disjunction between science and faith.

Contemporary post-moderns seem more willing than moderns to bypass the evolution debate and embrace the message of a loving God. In the modern way of thinking, if a person believed in evolution they would automatically discredit God and the Bible. Most post-moderns do not seek rational evidence to believe in God. Rather, they seek to satisfy their spiritual needs and become better people. We need to present Jesus, not as an argument, but in lives that reflect Jesus.

For me it takes a lot more faith to believe that all we see around us happened by chance without external intervention, than to believe in a personal, loving God behind all creation.
