De Kores of Cyrus Cilinder

Hormuzd Rassam vond in de negentiende eeuw een 22.5 cm hoge cilinder gemaakt van gebakken klei die dateerde uit 500 BC. De inscriptie is het verslag van Cyrus (in de Bijbel Kores genoemd) over hoe de god Marduk hem had gezegend in zijn pogingen om Babylonië te veroveren. Daarna wordt Cyrus’ beleid beschreven om de voormalige gevangen van Babylonië toe te staan terug te keren naar hun eigen land en daar de tempels voor hun eigen goden te herbouwen:

“From [Babylon] up to the city of Ashur and Susa, Akkad, to the land of Eshnunna, to the towns Zamban, Me-Turnu, Der up to the region of the Gutians, I returned to (these) sacred cult-cities on the other side of the Tigris, the sanctuaries of which have been ruins for a long time, the gods who live in them and established for them eternal sanctuaries. I (also) gathered all their inhabitants and returned them to their habitations. Furthermore, I resettled upon the command of Marduk, the great Lord, all the gods of Sumer and Akkad whom Nabonidus has brought into Babylon to the anger of the Lord of the gods, unharmed, in their chapels, the places which make them happy.” [1]

Praktisch gezien, heeft Cyrus slechts de situatie in zijn voordeel gebruikt. Hij wist dat gelukkige onderdanen, loyale onderdanen zouden zijn. Cyrus’ welwillendheid was daarom onderdeel van zijn internationale beleid. Hiermee vervulde hij, alhoewel onopzettelijk, Jesaja’s voorspelling over hem (Jesaja 44:28-45:1), dat hij de Heer zijn “Herder” en “Gezalfde” zou zijn die “Zijn welgevallen” zou uitvoeren. De Cyrus Cilinder lost vragen uit Ezra 1:2-4 op. Ezra zegt daar dat in het eerste jaar na de overwinning op Babylonië, de Heere God van de hemel Cyres had opgedragen om de tempel in Jeruzalem weer te bouwen en om het volk van God (de Joden) toe te staan om terug te keren.[2]
